Third content pack now out on Itch!

PLEASE NOTE:

This is a FREE UPGRADE if you already own the game. If you have previously purchased the game, but get a prompt to buy when trying to download, DO NOT buy it again (unless you're feeling generous). Itch can be a little...special sometimes. If you can't download it normally from the main page, make sure you're logged in, then check your game library on Itch: you should be able to download it there without issue.

I should also clarify for newcomers: the new content is cumulative. In other words, ALL THREE of the content packs' content (and the rest of the game) is included in this most recent release. There's no need to download anything else.

The third and final content pack is finally on Itch! As I said in a previous post, this finally completes GutterTrash, bringing it to 1.0.3. If you missed the previous post, this pack adds a blowjob mini-game as a second optional job in the plaza, as well as a scene gallery at the main menu. The gallery can be unlocked normally by reaching each scene, or by copying over the Gallery.js file in the "Gallery Unlock" folder to www\js\plugins. And as always, if you'd like to skip right to the new content, a starter save has been included in "StarterSave". Just copy both files there to www\save (you will need to create this folder if it doesn't exist).

It's a strange feeling hitting 1.0. Accomplishment at going up and down one mountain, trepidation as I look at the next, waiting there for me. But despite the best efforts of the rock I call a brain to the contrary, I do seem to be learning as I go, and there is excitement there too. There's still a LOT I want to explore with these characters and this setting. Looking up the dates for the new copy on the main page, I've discovered it's been a little over TWO YEARS since I first announced work on GutterTrash. It certainly doesn't feel that long.

Details will have to wait a bit though. I'll be monitoring this release for further bug fix needs for about a week, then moving ahead with Eiga on the Japanese translation (I'll patch AFTER too obviously, I'm just hoping to catch the majority before then). I'll also be working on finishing the gallery for the first game: the programming is fairly straight-forward, but I wanted to create a few new bits of art for it, so getting that finished will probably keep me busy for about two weeks out. All of that to say, roughly speaking, I MAY be getting into talking plans and deadlines for Chapter 3 in about two weeks, but that's only a rough date. It will be happening soon though; I'm VERY grateful the reception to these packs has been warm enough to make them possible, but I definitely need to finally get started on the next full game before too much longer.

In the meantime, thank you all once again. GT may seem small compared to a lot of games, but for one person working alone, it really did feel like a mountain, something I had to be careful to never think about in totality for too long at any given moment. And now it's done, because you all voted, with you money and in some cases your time to make it so. Hard work is essential for a project like this, but all the hard work in the world is useless if no one cares. You cared.

Thank you.

I have spent all week playing through this game, and unlocking and experiencing each and every ending, and I got to say this game is probably one of the best things I've ever experienced. This series hits so many buttons for me in all the best ways. Thank you so much for making a game that really feels like it was made for me. Every single element of this game, and the whole series so far is just perfect. Oh, and the strip club job, is probably the best oral mechanic I've ever seen in a game. I can not wait to see what you have in store for the next chapter. In fact I have decided to support you for what's to come, and joined your SubscribeStar. Keep up the amazing work, after taking a break of course, because you deserve it!

Thank you, really. At the end of the day I'm just banging rocks together here; this is an RPGMaker game, not some amazing multi-million dollar title or even one of those really slick indie games. Much like my life, everything in the Cruel Serenade games is JUST GOOD ENOUGH to work, to achieve the effect it sets out to. But as I've said, the metric for this stuff has always been myself. As best as I can within my limitations, I try to make something I enjoy playing, something that's fun, and hot, and has some interesting twists and turns to it. The production process for these games is basically me making an amusement park ride, riding it, and going "no, that turn needs to be sharper, the water spray needs to be faster, the ghosts need to go higher when the jump out of the old treasure chest..." And then I get out my ratchet, tweak it all, and ride it again, over and over until it actually works. In writing, or art, or game design, it's not so much about the specifics as the "ride" overall, and I do my best to make sure that works. I'm glad it did for you.

I'm especially pumped to read that "all week" bit, because that's exactly how I'd get with some of the games that led to this over many years. You get into this flow state of unlocking obscenity after obscenity and you just CAN'T STOP, you gotta keep it rolling. People talk about edging, but you don't know what edging is until you've played a game like this for four fucking hours straight. You play these games right, you're absolutely obliterated at the end, and if I've managed to recreate even a bit of that successfully, I've done my job.

And glad you liked the strip club minigame! It's simple, and I wish it was smoother and less laggy, but it's RPGMaker, limitations and all that. I'm glad it clicked for most people though, and that it didn't overstay its welcome.

Thank you for your support, and I look forward to making another game that hits that perfect spot.

That's a very good way to develop the game, and it really shows the love and passion you have for the project. As for the whole week, and edging bit, you absolutely hit the nail on the head. Don't worry, you very much did your job there, lol. It's absolutely everything I wanted in a game like this.

Even with the limitations of the software for the strip club job, you really pushed it to it's limits, and made a very good, and hot minigame. I really enjoyed it. I'll admit it can run a little long in the later stages, especially once you get deep in the "Slut Mode", and are still trying to beat the game, but I was still enjoying every time Mezz did his "job".

Thanks for the reply, and again I can't wait to see what you do next, and I'm more than happy to support you during the development.

You know I was just thinking about my reply to you earlier today and going "Christ, I hope I didn't go overboard, the poor guy was just trying to compliment me and I gave him a 60 Minutes interview." But that's how I tend to think; nothing, and then big springs when something catches me. I'm glad it hit right though, and same for the game. I may take a liiittle longer to do my official "start" announcement for 3, but soon. Planning is getting close to finished now, and I'm really getting into it. Definitely think you guys are gonna like this.

Fantastic minigame. I think I prefer video store path, with the changes to Mez's psyche being more fleshed out, but the interactive aspect this one has is pretty hot too. Almost feels like an animation if you do it quickly/fluidly enough, and the variety of preferences is a nice touch.

I will say, I got pretty frustrated the first few times because I thought the deepthroat customers were just unbeatable without passing out or cumming. Took me until the last shift to realize that I could just... stop sucking dick if I needed to... pretty in character huh?

Ha! To be fair, I did try to hint at that with the bartender's comments. I went back and forth on how far I wanted to "tutorialize" the controls, but ultimately decided to keep it really minimal and see if anyone complained or was confused. Not a single one in the early release group did, so I took that as a sign it was probably fine. By all means though, don't miss out, those gagging sounds are a big part of the fun of that game.

And fair enough on the porn store. I do think that's a more in-depth option with more characterization, but I wanted to experiment with something a little more on the interaction side rather than just narration for this one. "Dynamically build your OWN experience" and all that.

(+1)

To be perfectly clear, I do think the stripclub route is fantastic. The thing with the deepthroat customers was pretty obvious in hindsight, and when I say I prefer the video store route I'm not trying to imply anythings wrong with the stripclub. I think mechanics you're experimenting with are very cool, it's just that the video store might be one of the hottest things I've ever seen, anything would have a tough time matching that.

And while I'm here I'll mention a bug I found with the gallery mode. Was replaying the scene in the underground tunnel, where you find and break the canister of DB in the pipe, and then get captured and locked in the hidden bar. That initial bit, where you technically play as the hyena walking Mez back, somehow triggered the scene where the door gets "accidentally" left open and Mez tries to escape. It triggered in the zone you would normally hit in that later scene, but I'm not sure if it triggered when I (the leading hyena) hit it or when Mez (following) hit it. Also, I believe I was sprinting at the time, if that makes a difference.

It then instantly brought me to the final scene of that sequence (or maybe second to last? whichever scene the escape attempt event leads to), still playing as a hyena leading Mez. This meant that I was unable to interact with the other hyenas as the scene required, I'm guessing because the hyena I was actually controlling would be standing in between Mez and the target, softlocking the game and forcing me to restart it.

Oooh, ok. So you weren't being down on the strip club at all, you were just saying it was very hard to compete with the porn store. Even better then!

On the bug: it's important to clarify which version you're playing on, as I just made a tweak to that scene in .4. It was regarding going back and forth between the scene and the main menu several times, so if you were doing that, that bug may be the culprit. Make sure you're .4 to be safe, and if it's still happening, let me know and I'll see what I can find.

(+1)

hey bit so im looking for the gallery file.  Would it be itch > apps> guttertrash on my hardrive? Or is it around here on this page?

I can't speak specifically to where the Itch...store/program thing might put the game folder if you're using that, but once you've found the game folder, the gallery file is in www\Gallery Unlock. Gallery.js. Move that to www\js\plugins and agree to overwrite when prompted.

(+1)

So after i get the files were they need to be, will a gallery option be in the menu, or a computer terminal or some sort of book?

There should be a gallery option in the main menu regardless: the file just unlocks the individual scenes within it. If you're not seeing a gallery option, you likely downloaded an old version. Be sure you have 1.0.4 (though it's in .3 as well).

(+1)

ah ok I know what i did thanks Bit.  didnt have 1.0.4

Ha, no worries.

(+1)

How do I access that minigame?? I might being a bit stupid rn, but simply can't find how

It's one of the two "jobs" available to you in the plaza, the starting area when you reach the Gutter. Poke around the strip club when Mahir sends you out for "work".

I hope there will be more mini games like this. i much preferred it visually.
Nice touch with the saliva accumulating and then evaporating if you pull back.
Wish there was an anal option but you are already making a massive project solo so it's fine.
I was hoping for a bad ending, or like a loss of controll each time you fail like, like when you loose in the combat ally.

I also liked the bad ending with the one way mirror,  can't tell if new or I missed it when it was added.

Over all looking forward to the next chapter, I can tell that things are getting better with the practice you are getting while working on it.

(also please add more alternative outfits, I love them a lot)

Excellent. I was kinda half-and-half on this last one, which is why de-prioritized it till the end, partially because I wasn't sure if it could be pulled off, and partially, once I had, because I wished I could do more/make it perform better. So it's been good to see people are enjoying it.

I did consider doing it the other way around, a "fuckable wall" setup, the problem is there's no room for interactivity there if the player is playing Mezz, and it would be weird to suddenly switch them to a customer POV.

"I was hoping for a bad ending, or like a loss of controll each time you fail like, like when you loose in the combat ally." I mean yes, but you're already TWO LAYERS DEEP in bad ends: alley loss, leading to frozen pose scene, and then a plaza job requirement (leading to the glory hole). I do have to stop at SOME point so we can get on to the third chapter :D.

Nope, mirror end was the first content pack where I finished up all the main story stuff. Glad you finally found it. Be sure to check out OpenFireplace's handy guideif you haven't already if you want to make sure you've got everything (though now the gallery helps with that too if you're playing start to finish).

Ha, and glad you like the outfits. No more for this one, but there are definitely more planned for 3.

I was a bit hasty with my comment, didn't have much time to try the update.
Now with a bit more experience, yeah there is no need for extra punishment for failing.
i have no idea what the technical limitations are, but if my guess is correct then the minigame is basically a mask for you moving back and forth some tiles.
would it be possible for some later minigame to play around with changing positions to anal, oral by going back to the  kneeling starter tile
moving two tiles up to change to the other pose and then sorta replicate the oral part.

Two tiles up so you can put a separating wall so people don't accidentally snap into the wrong scene and it can give more frame to show Mezz getting into position.

Then again I'm just speculating on how the game works and have no actual idea about how it works.

I also did find a bug.
When I tried to go to glory hole for the third time, after telling as many customers as I could, I approached the glowing indicator from the left side (not sure if I walked over it or not, I was moving with the mouse click).
Mezz got frozen looking downwards while standing on the left side of the sparkles.
The cutscene tried to play but all it did was take any and all input control away.
Nobody walked in, no dialogue box, nothing. Had to close the game and restart it.

(1 edit)

Oh no problem, I like feedback regardless. On the anal bit: I mean if I did do that, I'd probably JUST do that, so I wouldn't even have to worry about switch-over, but there are ways to do that programatically. But again, it would either be passive or the whole "humping a wall" thing on Mezz's part, which I've always been kinda eh on.

As far as the bug, I'm not sure what you mean by "approached from the left." You can only interact with that space from the top or right side. I...don't know how he could be "frozen while on the LEFT side of the sparkles." That said, freezing when interacting with that spot was a bug earlier, but I thought I had it fixed. Will test in a bit and get back to you.

Edit: Ok, initial sanity check, I'm not reproducing the bug. I can interact with the activation spot fine after gathering the crowd, and the scene starts as it should. Which is somewhat expected: if this was an obvious bug preventing MOST people from finishing the pack I'm sure I would have heard about it earlier. Which means there's something niche that you managed to trigger that broke it. If you have a save that reproduces it reliably, can you toss it up on catbox.moe or something similar and link it? It would have to be TWO files, the numbered .rpgsave and the global.rpgsave just to be safe.

Okay so I was dumb and somehow confused left from right.
Anyways here are the files
.

To freeze the game all I do is simply click on the sparkle and it gets stuck.

Done it on the 1.0.4 build so there is no version miss match.

Using other interact buttons (z, enter, space) does not make this happen, only mouse click.

(2 edits)

Excellent, I'll take a look at those in a bit then. Tip for future: no need for separate uploads: just zip the files together and upload that. Uploading the raw files looks like it caused catbox to randomize your save names too, so I have no way of knowing which is the save and which is the global. I'll work it out though.

In the meantime though, a few things. First a little inside baseball: I use invisible "events" on the map to act as lighting sources via a plugin. When these are on the floor, you can walk over them. However, there's an annoying property of RPGMaker that makes it so that you cannot interact with an event (in this case the sparkles) if you're already standing within ANOTHER event, and there is a lighting event to the right of the sparkles. So, mouse or keyboard, you indeed cannot interact with it from the side. HOWEVER, this should not (and does not with keyboard) freeze anything.

Second, the mouse may explain why it wouldn't reproduce on my end, I almost never test anything with that input method. But I'll do a runthrough of those files and see what I can find.

Edit: Ok, can reproduce and I see what the issue is. I was assuming interaction from the top, so Mezz is scripted to move down on interacting with the sparkles. If he's on the side he can't move down, and the script hangs. This wasn't a problem normally, because via keyboard it simply refuses to trigger, for the reasons described above, but somehow mouse click is able to bypass this. Will revise for the next release.

Depends. If you mean you can't leave the club after failing a shift, no, that's intentional. You have to successfully finish a shift to leave. If you mean literally stuck in place and unable to move, then that would be a bug; please give me more info in that case.

Edit: If you ARE hanging, see Apple's thread above, should have this fixed for next release.

So I have played it. I gotta say the manual blowjob really did it's job, it's actually quite immersive to say the least. I love the detail that there's different way in pleasing different customer, amazing idea. I love the exposure/humiliation kink when Mezz's photos is leaked, I hope there's a bad ending when time end tho, but all things considered this game is awesome. Great job

(+1)(-1)

Excellent. When you're in the weeds making this stuff you tend to be overexposed (a normal player will play that game like 4 times, I have played it now....many, many more), and as a developer I'm always thinking in terms of the things I wish I'd been able to do better. So I'm glad that even as-is the mini game is...effective :D.

(1 edit) (+2)(-1)

I came into this late, but this was definitely a case of "better late than never" for me. I look forward to seeing what happens next to the cute rabbit, whether it's something cruel or perhaps even sweet.

Another weird question regarding the future of the series, and I wouldn't be surprised if this got asked already, but do you possibly intend for their to be tangible currency in the third game? Not like cash versus credit, I mean like the ability to purchase items and such.

As a side-question, what actually is Dazzle supposed to be? Is it a carbonated energy drink in the same light as Red Bull? Or more of a sports drink, like Gatorade?

(+1)(-1)

Thanks! Probably won't do anything with currency, because that's one more thing to manage and try to balance, and there's not really a need for that kind of depth: the games, even now that they're longer, are still pretty "short and sweet" by RPG standards (GT is maybe 8 hours to see everything, if you count some organic combat? That said, I certainly don't rule it out entirely; as with most things, it's largely what the story ends up dictating.

Dazzle is a highly acidic, battery-acid-with-citrus flavored energy drink, loaded with caffeine and any other number of stimulants and questionable ingredients. So yeah, more Redbull, or one of the hundreds of others out there.

(+1)

Not gonna lie, Red Bull was my occasional guilty pleasure, but now I stick to black coffee. I'm also now imagining Mezz, being a 4'0 rabbit, vibrating from excessive Dazzle intake; in the words of an intellectual, "Bunny go 'brrrr.'" ~ I just... made that up, actually.

As funny as that is, I actually see (and write) Mezz as one of those weird people who can down stuff like that, get a solid benefit from it, but never really get the jitters for some inexplicable reason. A freak of nature. And though that extreme may be unrealistic, caffeine sensitivity is a real thing: there are people devastated by half a cup of coffee, and others that have to drink mind-breaking amounts just to get a decent buzz going. Variation in body chemistry I guess. Though you'd think Mezz would be on the sensitive side given his size and lack of body mass. Maybe it's a bunny thing.

(+2)

I heard about people with ADHD being more resistant to stimulants, which is also something I experience as an ADHD patient. Caffeine and nicotine only make me feel focused, not buzzed, which I heard is a common trait we have; I quit smoking and vaping, to clarify. I'm not saying you intend for Mezz to have ADHD, it just reminded me of that.

Funny enough, depressants are the exact opposite for me, making me feel absolutely terrified. The only depressant I could handle was alcohol, although I quit that, too. Don't quote me on the pharmacological aspects relating to any of this, I'm not an expert. I also have autism, which may or may not affect how I react to some drugs, I really have no clue.

This talk of stimulants made me think of something interesting, though I'll share it privately, for whenever you have the time to read it.

(+1)

The way caffeine works is weird. It's less that it makes you energetic and more it slots into the receptors in your brain for another chemical that tells it that you're tired. The brain adapts so it makes more receptors so you have to consume more caffeine for the same effects. Mezz could have built a tolerance over time.

Oh believe me, I know about tolerance. I'm talking about something a little different though: the way the body responds, even completely fresh to a given substance, long before any tolerance has had time to build up. Personally, I'm kind of both: I'm VERY sensitive to caffeine, to the point that going in fresh after months away produces an almost euphoric effect, far beyond what most people describe. But on the other hand, while tolerance does build eventually and repeated use ends up negatively impacting my mood, even on a fresh exposure I'm never really "jittery" like some people describe, twitching and shaking, feeling like the world's closing in on me etc. There are a lot of people that basically give themselves panic attacks if they have any significant amount, and I've never felt even remotely like that. The worst caffeine has ever done to me is like how Bilbo described the effect of the One Ring: like butter spread over too much bread.
