Chapter 3 update: New "Friends"

Hey all, finally time for another progress update on the next chapter. As always, I'll start with a general summary of progress, and then go on to the new content I'm able to share. So if you just want a quick update, you can stick to the first section here.

As always, progress is slower than I'd hoped, but I do have a fair bit done. I had wanted to have all the art assets aside from scene CG done by now, which is definitely not the case. I am well over the halfway point at least though, with a fair bit in the bag. As things are looking right now, this will probably shift release forward a month, November rather than October, but we'll see. That said, the pieces are finally fitting together fairly well, and I have some fun stuff to show, so let's get to that.

One of the reasons this bit has taken longer than expected is that I usually only introduce one new species for each game (Scratch being the exception last time), which I then just do variants of for boss, antagonist and mobs. This time I decided to do THREE. Which meant I had to learn a new animal for each character, in addition to working out their design. But let's get to them.

First, the panther, who you already know. He has a name now, two actually. One of which is Lucius.

Second, our secondary antagonist helpful guide:

This is Elias Farthing. A very enterprising gentleman feline of the city who has a strange knack for being everywhere with "helpful" items and info. The plan is that he'll be the store for this adventure: you'll collect otherwise useless items and trade them in to buy the usual energy and health, as well as potentially some other things. Entirely trustworthy I'm sure.

Third, the mobs!:

These imposing fellas had a name, but I'm reworking it. We'll just call them the wolves for now. They're effectively werewolves without the were part: they don't transform to or from anything, but they have that weird angular, muscular, elongated form, the rough, bestial canine instinct and a lot of strange magic flowing through them. They are one of two groups vying for control in the strange city Mezz finds himself in, the other being a group of cultist cats which will come in a later content pack.

That's one thing I should clarify actually. Mezz will end up in a lot of strange places this game, but due to the first update a lot of people were thinking about exploring a mansion, which will actually be a fairly small part of the game, mostly at the beginning and end. Most of it will take place in a city that's kind of a spooky abandoned Victorian setting. A bit Bloodborne.

Now let's talk combat. The battle sex in this will be a somewhat more simple version of the one from GT. Rather than slowly wearing down a stat to get a chance to pull you in, if you're not careful the wolves will suddenly grapple you, which looks like this:

Fail to escape, possibly with a quicktime combo, and you take damage to your third stat, which will probably be something like "resistance". The theming on 3 revolves around Power and how people instinctively and automatically respond to it (especially when enhanced by magic). Drain the stat to zero, and you're forced to submit, first mentally, which looks like this:

And stripped:

And then physically. Your only move options will be one of the surrenders, each of which is paired with a way of being fucked like in GT. Unlike in GT, you'll learn them gradually, unlocking new ones as you go. The first you get automatically the first time your resistance is drained, and it looks like this:

Which then leads to this:

I'm still working out some of the rest of the fight loop, revising and re-revising, so I won't get into that too much, but this gives you some idea. In general I want it to be faster and rougher than GT, but still with a little more agency than 1. Unlike in GT there won't be any specific target with these surrenders, you can use any of the ones you know. The wolves aren't particular. Rather than training like GT, the mechanic and motivation will be more "become more and more corrupted so you have more and more ways to give in when you're 'forced' to."

And as always, things like mechanics are always subject to change up until the game's out: GTs battlesex mechanics were constantly shifting as I worked on the game. But this is the plan so far.

And that's it for now. Next is getting a few more of these surrender pairs done (the other two I have immediately planned are even more filthy), one or two detailed cut-in images for important story items, and walking sprites for the new characters. After that I can FINALLY start in on the maps and programming, though I have already started doing some test maps to work out the tilesets I'll be using.

I've said this before, but as much as I try, figuring progress on game dev is tricky, because you're never doing quite the same thing the same way. Which is good, I don't want to just make the same game over. As much as I'm able, I try to iterate and improve, at least a little. But that means it's often hard to tell if you're doing great, ok, or really falling behind. All I can say is I'll keep an eye on it, keep chomping away, and do my best to keep giving honest progress updates like this one.

And finally, of course, thanks again all those who bought and continue to buy the games, and to those supporting over on SubscribeStar. It's only because of you that these games can exist. I had assumed interest and sales would fall off a cliff a few months after release, or at least after the last content pack (it is a small game after all), but that has very much not been the case, and the continued interest and enthusiasm around the games has been incredible.  And if you're new here, and like what you see, feel free to toss a few bucks in yourself. Even the small subs help a lot.

Hope you like this, let me know, and I'll see you all in another 3 months!

finally waited for your news, I hope I can play your game as soon as possible

Oh my that's a really good outlook for Ch3! I really could compliment just about everything... Cool power dynamic, cool characters, and cool setting... Hitting the spot man! Kind of curious why we going for a more halloweenie vibe. Fits nicely with the power play of being overwhelmed, cultists with cthulu(or any outwordly power) and werewolves with their brute strenght and all.

Don't even know what's the best highlight for me... Enemies are pretty hot, but the concept of a shady ally can be even hotter than a strong enemy. So I REALLY like that one! Mahir fit that role in the previous game, and he was my favorite character, but Elias takes it into a nice new level.

Good job! Always felt like blabbing to boost your morale I have literally nothing to critique, but I can say your devlogs are becoming better. So you're clearly doing something right!

(+1)

Aw, good to hear, was wondering when you'd see this. Yeah, I'll be trying to not go too cartoony halloween with the theming, but definitely more of an eerie/odd kind of setting this time. And yeah, Elias is going to be a little tricky for several reasons, but I have quite a bit planned with/for him.

"Always felt like blabbing to boost your morale" Hey, that helps too. That's another reason I do these updates. I'm OBLIGATED to, and it helps keep me on track in terms of schedule, but also it's a long, lonely time in the creation mines, so it's good to poke my head up occasionally and check in with the audience/fans before I dive back in.

(+1)

Ah, so good to hear from you again. I had hopes you would post in January and you did! Single devs are the ones who struggle the most when it comes to making a game because they need to manage their work without interfering with their life.

I'm happy to hear(?) that this game is still getting a lot of (well-deserved) support even after more than a year from launch. Your games have a lot of dedication put into and very creative approachs, and I think their success reflect that.

Keep up the good work, bit!

Aw, thanks Dino. And I will. With projects like this it's very much a marathon, not a sprint. Just gotta keep a good pace.

(+1)

Very excited to see this update :) keep up the great work !

Thanks!

(+2)

Ahh, we're getting spoiled by these characters and another way to submit

Yeah, 3 will be a bit of an odd one out in some ways, but I think people will enjoy it.

(+1)

Honestly, you surprised me with the new mechanics, I was expecting the next chapter with red, but blue eyes? I think it's perfect like this! Although of course another enemy may have magic of a different color, in any case, I love that you are still enthusiastic about the plans for chapter 3! Keep it doing champion, i wish a good chapter from your hands.By the way, I would like to tell you something about some things in some social network, but I don't know if you are active through Furaffinity.

Thanks! And yeah, I check FA daily, feel free to toss me a note.

(+1)

Been seeing lots of werewolves in this type of game lately.  I love it!

I've been planning to do spooky chapter for a while now, and once you're doing spooky chapter, werewolves are almost a given.

(+1)

From Hypnosis, to Brainwashing, to Submission.  The big buff pups are a nice enemy.

I'm curious about the reputable merchant.  Wondering if perhaps he has an alternate route for selling you things, like if you fail to find or lose the items he needs, he can offer another means of payment.

(+1)

Oh we're definitely doing alternate routes via him. Moreso even than you might realize.

(+1)

This all sounds so wonderful. Love the idea of the new mobs, and characters. Hope there's also the possibility of some fun interaction with the Elias. Keep up the great work. Happy to continue to support you, and look forward to more.

Thanks, will do!

(+1)

Love your work! Hope this one will be as good as like other chapters

(+1)

Thanks!

So strange habit i have is i like to make up voices for different characters based on design and lore. For example when i first saw Mezz on e621 i read that you said kind of snarky over confident crime fighter so in my mind i read his lines in a voice similar to Bubsy the Bobcat. I have already done the same for Elias Farthing i went with the old timey southern "gentleman" conman kind of voice that seems helpful but is just in it for himself i love the new material keep up the great work Bitshift.

(1 edit)

Yeah I've noticed some people like to do that. I mean you can have whatever voices work for you, but as I've said this is kind of a weird, distorted Victorian england-ish setting (maybe slightly more modern, but in that range), so officially, more sleezy huckster of that ilk, someone who wears a gentleman's accent like he wears that suit, but both are clearly obtained through second-hand theft rather than legitimate position.

(+1)

Yea I missed the Victorian theme thing the first time i read your post i went back to read through again and realized southern thing doesn't work but I didnt go back to change that part but yea still the sort of snake oil salesman kind of vib is what im getting off of him good stuff all in all.

(+1)

I like the mobs to be like any other enemy with different sex scenes or side quests and more or will the mobs be a big stronger boss

I...I'm not sure I follow that sentence. In a general sense the mobs will function the same as always, though they will have their own "feel": I tried to make the boars a bit of a hit sponge, the hyenas much less so, but also faster. So the wolves probably will hit a bit harder, but not to mini-boss levels, and there will be ways to deal with it.

(+1)

I will but will they also have different sex scenes and a lot of side quests that lead into a sex scene and maybe more mini games

Probably. I don't want to commit to too many specifics, but in general the type of content (in game design terms, not flavor) should be fairly similar to GT: battle sex, scenes, and yeah, some side stuff too, though some will come after the initial release.

(+1)

I am SO excited for this, gosh. Hotter than ever, in concept and in art!!! I can't wait to play this and I'm happy to support it for as long as it takes!!!

Aw, good to hear, especially from you Sheep. Always good to see ya.

(1 edit) (+1)

"Go out and kill a few beasts, it's for your own good." - Elias, probably.

I probably would've written more, but I don't think I can outcompete the guy a couple of comments below me (that big ass review is still coming though).

(+1)

Looking forward to it!

(+1)

I'm sooooo excited~ your games are always amazing to play, even receiving a Lil of news brings me joy! LOVE that big woof~

(+1)

Thanks! Yeah I think the wolves are going to have lots of...potential.

(+1)

I love it

Thanks!

"the mechanic and motivation will be more "become more and more corrupted so you have more and more ways to give in when you're 'forced' to."

DUUUDE, these words seriously hit EVERY button for my corruption kink! the last two games were already so freaking good with unlocking and furthering Mezz's various "slut-modes" and paths of submission and debauchery instead of fighting and actually being a Hero. but i LOVE the sound of this, seemingly giving the player more and more abilities for slutting and submitting the more times you do so to certain enemies? HELL YES!

man, after the events of CS and CS:GT, and this upcoming Chapter with the way i prefer to play them, Mezz is gonna subconsciously have more sexual bottoming skill and experience than an entire brothel full of femboys, as well as having more horny triggers than anyone will be able to keep track of!

lol i'm just imagining Mezz eventually "saving his world" through completing ALL the slut-routes, and going home to live with Scratch in between jobs... just for his mousey friend to randomly find his bunny's triggers completely by accident over time...

~some antiquated equipment scratch got working making a clicking sound at juust the right frequency...

~listening to security footage of the Boar gang with Mezz, and one of them says something strange that Mezz cant quite make out, but it triggers something within...

~ etc, etc, etc.... ~ <3

(+2)

Excellent.

He's accumulating a lot to be sure. Although technically that's all down to the player: He could be 100% pure, or only have experience from one of the adventures. But yeah, 1 was effectively being used like a toy and not even knowing, 2 was all about being trained, and this will be more "know your place" overwhelmed by power etc kind of mind fuckery. If you're a turbo nerd you can think of it in terms of password cracking: the enemies in 1 just...had the password. The enemies in 2 use a dictionary attack. The enemies in 3 are nation-state-level supercomputers that just brute-force it in no time.  Or, to look at it another way, they don't need gimmicks because they ARE the gimmick. Advantages of being spooky :D. The defense in 3 is all going to be "How do I avoid getting immediately crushed?" And there will be ways, but that's a very different starting point.

(+1)

The password cracking analogy is, interesting. Going with that theme, maybe that means the final villain (or group) at the end of all this is just someone that "has the password," so to speak. Someone so unfathomable that they don't need cheap toys, special conditioning, or strange magic to control others.

Oh we have a long way to go before we're there. But we'll see :D.

(+1)

ooooo, That's hot

(+1)

So this is not out yet?  Just confirming. XP

Nope. This is the second progress update on the next game, slated for initial release Oct\Nov of 25 (as of now).

(+1)

Coolio! Love the games so far. ^.^

(+2)

Sounds delightful. Can't wait.

(+2)

Btw I like how you draw the cat.

Thanks!
