Itch has shadowbanned NSFW games
NOTE: I have disabled download (and I believe purchase) of the game for the time-being. Itch is apparently refusing payouts on games deemed not in line with their new standards (luckily my regular one just cleared yesterday :P), so there's no reason to give money to "me" if I'll never see it. Super cool move on their part. Please do not buy either CS game until this situation is resolved, one way or the other.
I am still taking in what this means. No idea who will even see this, if anyone, but I'm posting here just too just in case.
1. No communication went out to creators.
2. Some searches show some NSFW games, others have been completely cleared out. NSFW and Furry for example lists nothing now.
3. The games still appear in people's libraries, for now. Unlike past banned games they haven't nuked them entirely. Yet.
4. The game pages are still up, at least for now: https://bitshiftgames.itch.io/cruelserenade, https://bitshiftgames.itch.io/cruel.....de-guttertrash.
5. I can still access my dashboard and funds. Needless to say, I've requested a withdrawal of what's currently in their system.
This is...not good. Due to various health issues I don't like to talk about, it's become increasingly difficult/impossible for me to work a normal job. Itch and substar were a lifeline, a chance at putting together a future. Now that may be over.
Things are very bad.
Places you should monitor to keep in touch:
FA: https://www.furaffinity.net/user/bitshift/
SubscribeStar: https://subscribestar.adult/bitshift (There's a free tier to just follow annoucements).
Substar is still up. Feel free to sub there for a bit if you'd like. Itch was half the income the games made though. Will update with relevant info as I get it.
It seems like all NSFW expression and sexwork is going to be blackmailed off the internet by visa/mastercard the way things are going. Wouldn't be surprised if they even come for FA at this point.
Edit: There is no concrete evidence of this yet, but I would be very surprised if Collective Shout and you-know-who, the people behind the recent Steam purge and a bunch of other nonsense weren't involved with this, directly or indirectly.
Edit the second: They finally have an announcement: https://itch.io/updates/update-on-nsfw-content. And what a surprise I was right, Collective Shout's greasy little fingers are all over it. For context, these people are so wacko conservative they want to ban generically sexy AAA games, it isn't just niche stuff.
On the one hand, glad to have SOME word, and that itch isn't at least immediately dumping everything. On the other:
"We are currently conducting a comprehensive audit of content to ensure we can meet the requirements of our payment processors. Pages will remain deindexed as we complete our review. Once this review is complete, we will introduce new compliance measures. For NSFW pages, this will include a new step where creators must confirm that their content is allowable under the policies of the respective payment processors linked to their account.
Part of this review will see some pages being permanently removed from itch.io. Affected accounts will be notified via their account’s email address from our support address. You can reply to that email if you have any follow up questions."
I don't have high hopes for this review process.
Edit the third: Also I want to be crystal clear: I've rolled my eyes at a lot of the decisions Itch has made over the years, and this one is real, real bad, but let's be clear, this is a hostage situation. Their choices are: 1. ban NSFW 2. Refuse, lose all payment processing, and be forced to shut down the site. I don't love the Itch admin, but they basically have a gun to their head here. Don't get it twisted, the villains are MasterCard, Visa, and Collective Shout. Let's focus the energy where it belongs.

Well.... that sucks.
And not in a good way.
I'm in the process of starting a new job after a period of unemployment so can't hit the subscribestar yet but should be there in a month or so.
I know that's no direct help to you now and you have no guarantee that random internet text will actually result in results but... wanted to offer some support/hope anyway.
Meantime I've joined FA (you weren't kidding about it being Janky X) and I'm following you on there so hopefully if itch goes full nuclear there'll still be connection.
Read the long post on your FA profile.
Please don't feel bad about doing what you need to do under the current circumstances. The economics, as you've laid them out, make sense. They suck but they make sense. Thank you for the honesty, openness and trust. Pre-buying is a risk and I very much get not wanting to offer something for sale that you don't have complete right now. Life is... life and none of us can promise tomorrow with any certainty.
But I for one am grateful for the chance to support you and to take a chance with you that you'll find a way through.
And hopefully, in so doing, to make it a little bit more likely that you and I and all the other furry and non furry hypnokink loving freaks here and elsewhere will get a cool, clever, cute, kinky and hot game to enjoy somewhere down the way.
Take care of yourself and thank you. For everything you've given us and everything you still wish to give.
No, that's fine. I understand many people just don't have the funds, and I don't want anyone to be spending beyond what they can afford. But there are some people for whom a $10 a month charge is totally trivial, and I've had multiple convos in the past few days where people go "oh right you have a subscribestar! Totally forgot, happy to contribute!" So it's a balance between not being overly annoying and mentioning/reminding enough that those that ARE in a position to support, and want to, actually end up there.
And thanks, I'll do what I can. A power user tip for FA: deep in the settings, you'll find an option to switch to "legacy" mode or whatever. Not the legacy coloring, but the actual mode. Do so. It will look like something from 2006 (because it is), but IMHO it's way easier on the eyes, and much smoother to navigate.
man...
Indeed.
Looks like it's back to SubscribeStar, I suppose.
I understand you're not keen on the idea, but a Discord community would be lovely sometime in the future.
Noohoho. Never in a thousand years will I do a "discord community." I know how that movie ends. If hard-pressed I MIGHT do a NON community, just a bunch of rooms with info, maybe downloads, but zero ability for anyone to post or speak. But that's probably as far as I'd go, and even that is iffy.
would love to have that to be honest, just some place to more easily keep up with news
Will certainly consider then. But we'll see.
Hell yeah
So much for helping your games reach a larger audience, heh… Lucky I downloaded the game before you took the files though!
But I’ll choose to be optimistic with CS though! It may be very dark and twisted, but this isn’t an issue with it specifically, the whole internet is banding together against these jerks trying to shape the world to their will. I’ve yet to see anyone fully side with them, this’ll be a rocky time for sure but I believe we’ll get through!
You’re already sending us to FA or Substar, but if I may continue offering help, I’ve got good experience in Community management and could help out reaching over to other socials if you want me to!
Yeah, I had to laugh a little as this hit IMMEDIATELY after the translation hit. But someone did ask for it specifically! So there was demand.
I'm...not thrilled at the prospect of setting up on x or discord right now. But I will keep the offer in mind. Things may change in the future.
Hey, if it comes to it, I could help building discord server for you. I know how to set everything up to make it easier for you to focus on what's important: Your games! Solo devs already go through enough hassle on a normal basis and I've seen great games being lost for such things..
Oh discord is an absolute morass. If I did make one, I'd probably lock everything down and make it PURELY a one-way broadcasting kind of thing. But Discord just swapped CEOs and is going public/has gone public, so they'll probably be next on the censorship train and posting a boob will be punishable by death by next year.
Sorry for being so negative though. I appreciate the offer, and will certainly consider if I end up having to do a discord for some reason.
Of course, totally understandable to want to avoid those places, but if you just have to extend to them, I can help with managing those accounts if you need me to, I just wanna help out however I can!
While it doesn't help right now, there is a petition out to get this to stop.
https://chng.it/55yRVXHzxn
I say we all sign it, it's at least an attempt to fix this and stop the excessive overreach.
Yup, it's been brought up. To be clear, this petition has nothing to do with government, it's a petition TO VISA/Mastercard to reverse course which..lol. But it also takes 2 minutes, so may as well. Somewhat more tangibly, H.R.987 - Fair Access to Banking Act and a senate version are in committee as we speak, have been submitted multiple years in a row without going anywhere. By a bunch of republicans actually (they didn't like that VISA wasn't letting them buy legal guns from legal gun stores). Prohibits exactly this:
"(b) Prohibition.—No payment card network, including a subsidiary of a payment card network, may, directly or through any agent, processor, or licensed member of the network, by contract, requirement, condition, penalty, or otherwise, prohibit or inhibit the ability of any person who is in compliance with the law, including section 8 of this Act, to obtain access to services or products of the payment card network because of political or reputational risk considerations."
Unfortunately not a single dem has signed on in the past and it always dies.
When I found out about the Itch.io shadowban, I immediately came rushing here! it's wild to see that, even if you search Cruel Serenade on the search bar, the game does not show at all. "NSFW" tag also does not do much.
May I ask if you have a plan in mind regarding this? besides word of mouth, there won't be many ways for such games to reach new players. Considering your game's topics, I'm afraid the review process doesn't sound very promising... It's a really tough spot for all of you, because you can't really escape payment processors wherever you are, which are the main problem.
I'm following another game which is having the same problem and I'll be sure to pass it along to you if they come up with an idea! Hopefully there will be a place to welcome all these forsaken games... xd
Ey Dino. I go over this more in my new post, but yeah, the effect isn't just in the initial loss of income. The whole point of Itch was network effect, and that will alllll go away now. I have an FA, and I suppose I could commission some stuff occasionally and get it up on e6 to get the word out, but it's grim. Best strat for now is that I'm hoping to convince enough people to "pre-buy" the game on Substar to secure development, at least for chapter 3. But it's an enormous blow to momentum: 4k followers here, potentially just gone. Follow over on FA if you aren't already, no telling how long this page will remain up: https://www.furaffinity.net/user/bitshift/.
Oh, I really hate this. Um, but I wanted to ask... I recently changed my computer and wanted to redownload this game... I bought it when it was still in its first updates and I wanted to play all the new stuff now that I have time. I wanted to ask if there's any way for those of us who bought it to redownload it, or at least the latest update of the game? I'm from Latin America and right now buying dollars here is complicated, which is why I don't think I can afford to pay for Subscribestar, much less keep it monthly... Besides, well, I bought said chapter, so I wanted to know if you had already thought about something with that... I'm sorry if I caused any inconvenience or problems, it's just that I love your games and they are my favorites, so I wanted to play them again...
Always watch over your archives carefully. That said, I didn't pull the game lightly, because I knew this would happen in a few situations at least. Can you check and confirm you can't download it from your library either? Also, I would recommend contacting me over at FurAffinity via the notes (DM) system if it's not too much trouble: less chance you'll get lost in the shuffle and I can toss you a private download easier over there. https://www.furaffinity.net/user/bitshift/
Well, looks like Mezz has a new mission to do
I genuinely write "dark" fiction because it's less dark than real life. Controllable, understandable, has an arc. Sure I'm not the only one. And now that is being taken away, by people literally too low-iq to understand how fiction works.
Yeah it sucks, hopefully you and the other nsfw devs will be okay
That is literally my core design Philosophy put into words and even then id Toned down My Designs to try to make it "Acceptable" for Console release/the "general public", because the impact I want my games to have was meant to be a look at where we are right now and to Stop ignoring the literal daily tragedies that are Happening and being ignored, and yet in the time its taken to get even chapter 1 of 36 developed (Im stuck in prototyping hell trying to get all the mechanical systems together) its gotten to the point that I'd Straight up rather live in what was meant to a Dystopian Parallel to the present/Recent past then reality because at least theirs actually Hope in my setting unlike reality,
Several threats in my narrative are meant to straight up reflect real world issues, for example the Ice Demons from the North (Artic) of act 2 and 3 are meant to be a Representation of those who've allowed their Will and Compassion/Emotions to Be Completely subsumed by another becoming a near Mindless army for one of the Cults of personality (theirs also the multiple actual cults to really hit home the Cult of personality thing since everyone in these circles can only view things as on their side or against them) who's sole Drive is To Absorb the Heat energy of Others (to try and replace the heart/soul they've lost though only recognise its absence unconsciously) converting them into ice demons as WW3 simultaneously is starting the ice Demons quickly becoming the Threat to the world targets with the nukes Only For the Nuclear Fire To literally end up doing nothing as the ice demons just absorb all the heat energy contained their in, and that first nukes firing happens on Christmas Eve to show that No Day or Night is sacred anymore.
And that's on the More grand end of the design on the lower end we have the abuse that's happening every day in plain sight or just out of sight even at the familial level that's being ignored (not so fun fact the global average for child abuse rates(just Reported cases not the even larger number that goes unreported) is around 1 in 4 (25%), yeah almost a quarter of all kids are Abused in some form, My art I Want to resonate with them to help them find hope and believe help exists, Because art is Supposed to Disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed.
Sorry for the long rant whenever I begin talking about my big project I kinda just lose the ability to stop myself from talking about it till i reach an end of topic.
What's your thoughts in general on this? Planning to stick around on Itch?
To be honest my thoughts are currently uncertain but considering the subject matter my games cover even just from a More "Veiled" perspective I'm currently considering abandoning any pretense of censoring my work Beyond the absolute Darkest of the content in my earlier drafts and since itch clearly isn't a safe space anymore at least , I honestly don't know how I will actually spread word about my game , it honestly feels like almost 5 years of life life have just been executed like a sick puppy behind a barn, I just have to hope the fact that my game isn't all darkness and is more dichotomous allows me to use its light side to gain some level of traction, and worst case scenario I can just Censor the old fashioned way with black Cubes like I'm already doing for some of the Gore scenes (which is also simultaneously because of physical material in the characters eyes limiting their vision preventing them from seeing just how gorey the scene before them is ( chapter 15 Lucius (one of the 4 protagonists) gets kidnapped by a cult that aims to Sacrifice his Organs to cleanse Him of his "Sins" Using the Rich Magic and Altered Laws of reality within phantasia Zones to Substitute the organs functions with the final step being the Cleansing of the brain(Brainwashing through torture symbolism) of course he's able to escape and with his magical talent reconstruct his Removed organs but that doesn't mean he wasn't the only one chained up having their organs removed in that Building)
and yet alot of games have big popularity and alot of creators make games for people i think there should be a feature like confirm your age so you can acess the nsfw games it would be a better option too
which could help
like this is so dumb and it breaks my heart to see people lose what they love
Oh the "feminists" campaigned for that too (scare quotes because if someone is campaigning for women to have LESS rights and freedoms, they're probably not a feminist). That's why half the states in the country now can't show you porn on a website unless you give them an ID (ie, blackmail material).
The situation is ridiculous and a bit concerning, because if we start like this, there is only a slippery slop ahead of us.
Anyway, to obviate at this problem you could make your own website, i have see other creator do that for this kind situation, for payment PayPal or other methods should do. I'm not an expert in this kind of thing, this is one possible solution that i come up whit.
It's not about making your own website, this is an issue related to global payment infrastructure - PayPal and Stripe are part of the problem as well, not just bank card providers like Visa and Mastercard.
The problem is that the paying circuits are bullying big NSFW reseller, but if the payments are from an private PP account to another account, in theory they doesn't what kind of product are sale, so the ban is not applied
Yes, as Dan said, there is no escaping this, short of legislation or eventually some form of crypto. I think the average person doesn't understand just how far Visa and Mastercard control EVERYTHING. There IS no "paypal", "Stripe", "Patreon", "Gumroad" (remember them?) etc. Pull off the Scooby doo villain mask, and it's just credit cards again. It's credit cards all the way down. Paypal can technically do a bunch of stuff outside of the CC system for example (which is what made it so successful), but it still has to INTERFACE with CCs. What do you think would happen to Paypal if tomorrow people just...couldn't use their credit cards on it? Uh huh.
1. EVERYTHING ONLINE IS CREDIT CARDS
2. UNLIKE CASH, CC CAN AND WILL KICK YOU OFF THE SYSTEM FOR WHATEVER INFRACTION THEY LIKE.
3. PRESSURE GROUPS (OF ALL SIDES) KNOW THIS, AND FREQUENTLY WEAPONIZE IT.
Things are very bad.
That said, SubscribeStar is still functional, and probably will be for a while because they're....weird. They've got some very odd receivership bank stuff set up. But if it work, it works.
How do we kill Collective Shout at this point?
First let's be clear, because this is the modern era and no one has brains: We're talking FIGURATIVELY about an ORGANIZATION. But that's a good question, and one I'm not really equipped to answer. I think it's past time furries formed a lobbying group for this shit. Beyond that, the far right, pushed off of many platforms, has started to form their own, "alt tech." Maybe it's time furries, NSFW creators and net sex worker (like those screwed by the recent Fansly ban) started doing the same. I KNOW there are furry lawyers out there. Might be the time to shine.
You have to figure out who is funding them, find Criminal evidence of wrong doing in some form or other, then black mail them into pulling their funds from Collective shout, and you have to do this to each of the individuals or organizations that are funding Collective shout to the Tune of 510M annually.
So the Current situation as it stands explained by Itch.io is the same as what happened with steam as of 3 days ago A group from Australia named Collective Shout has decided to demand that payment processors Censor games that don't fit into their perfect world, as a result steam has already removed near a hundred games and Itch.io has DELISTED ALL adult content as they review EVERYTHING, in order to find content that doesn't comply with the payment platforms.
Their is a petition on change.org in motion to stop this BS before it results in a TOTAL ban in adult or adult/adjacent content on all platforms like they tried in the 90's
https://www.change.org/p/tell-mastercard-visa-activist-groups-stop-controlling-w...
i am in Australia and this is heartbreaking to see my Favorite stuff being deleted or removed
Someone who knows what they're doing, and has some time and money needs to gather up all this anger and start some actual political action. Furries especially often have very deep pockets: it is FAR past time that we have our own lobbying and legal org, something in the vein of the Comic Book defense fund, but fandom oriented.
agreed because these games are fun
i did sign that tho
Definitely sign petitions but also call the payment processors and complain. Collective Shout claims they got the processors to do this with 1000 people and if even a fraction of the people signing this called to complain we'd top that number easy.
Exactly. And hey, good to see you here, despite circumstances!
Same here. I lurk but I chime in occasionally when I have something to add ^v^
On the one hand, Change.org petitions are essentially worthless. On the other, it takes like 2 minutes, may as well. On the third hand, as Corbin said (hey Corbin!) call the payment processors. Supposedly this happened because 1000 people called and bitched to them and said sexy things were VERY SCARY and HURT WOMEN (even though women are some of the most horny, degenerate, holy shit porn lovers (and creators) out there). Probably this is just VISA/Mastercard getting an excuse for censorship they wanted to do anyway. but let's see what happens if 1000 people call them and tell them to stop censoring media. Or 10,000. Or 100,000. I supposedly have 4k followers here, and I'm just one rinky dink game creator. Itch just nuked north of TWENTY THOUSAND NSFW games off the platform. Even one caller per game would be a bit noticeable.
If you do, don't be rude to the customer service rep though. They have as much culpability and control over this situation as me (0%). Try to escalate to someone higher up, be clear about the complaint, and try to frame it in broad, non-cringe terms (censorship of artistic expression in general). Stress that the same group wanted to suppress mainstream games like Beyond Two Souls, and basically anything with attractive women in it, no matter how tame.
this breaks my heart, when I saw a post on Twitter that this stuff was gone my immediate thought was you. I’m so sorry they’re pulling this shit. Hope all goes well…
It's pretty grim. For now, be sure to follow over on FA if you aren't already: no telling how long this page will be around for.
Fucking Collective Shout, I saw it happen on Steam, and figured it would hit here too! That is fucking stupid.
I hope this and steam are enough to finally get a counter rage thing going on socials, but who knows. To some degree I question how much this was even Collective Shout, and how much it was just Visa wanting to do this anyway and having an excuse. You dumped a major commercial partner over 1000 angry wackos calling you? Really? I'm sure they're about to get a lot more that 1000 calls. But we'll see if it does anything.
Hard to say. They are run by NCOSE (National Center on Sexual Exploitation), who is also going after Bad Dragon, as well as many other sex shops. They were also against same sex marriage, and tried to sue libraries that were not in the jurisdiction of any of their members to remove books. Ever heard about the book bans in Texas, yup, same folks. They got Visa and Mastercard to drop Pornhub back in 2020, and went after XVideos the same way. its their standard operating procedure.
I'm still befuddled by that event, like pornhub could have 1 billion users, and it can just be done like that, with no backlash?
People kept saying "we can make more than 1000 calls" but I'm sure those 1000 calls are not made to customer lines. That wouldn't even get a ripple.
Hard to say. But it's a pressure campaign, and the people screwed by this, the steam ban, and countless others in recent years can certainly launch pressure campaigns too. Just a question of how well-organized it can become.
My point is those 1000 calls all have to reach the board directly to have a effect. To actually pressure them through call center you'll have to be able to overwhelm their capacity over an extended period of time. That's gonna take, 10,000 calls per day for two weeks?
If 1000 people send the CEO a message on LinkedIn there could be some effect.
Meanwhile, would you consider using some Japanese platform, such as DLsite? I think they are going to at least try to hold, for how much bigger and mainstream their industry is. But I don't know how practical it can be. They were not famous for being user-friendly to foreigners but there seem to be some improvements. If there is a sizable enough wave of immigration it may even entice them to be more open.
They do have an EN section, but a. They've been hit with a censorship wave already (though not quite as bad), and my understanding is it's much worse for the EN section. b. Yeah, not sure if I can even set up there as a foreigner, or how the payout system would work. c. I actually looked up the details on DLsite a while back and their rates are robbery. They take like 30%, even if you're native (for contrast, itch was about 7%, and that's all payment processor fees). Pixiv has their own similar crowdfunding/monthly payment thing, but that's ALSO censored now (although again, not as much as stuff in the US.) But believe me, I've considered, just probably not practical. If Japan unfucked their fees and gave visa the finger as they seem intent on doing, they could make a tidy profit being a haven for this stuff, but it's doubtful that will happen.
I wanna draw it, I wanna see it. Is there a random payment processor you forgot to ask?
I've been watching this ripple over every nsfw community and site I hang out on for several months now. Finally came to roost here. Wonder how long it'll be till e6 and FA are gone. They're not major commerce sites, but they still have to pay their hosts, and be able to accept donations in the case of FA.
Is there is something capitalism is good at is making alternatives, Visa and Mastercard don't have the monopoly, other payment processors will learn from this shit show and gain popularity. Stay strong
It's literally a duopoly. Everything you think is another system: Patreon, Stripe, Paypal etc is really just Mastercard/Visa with extra steps. Vanishingly few things are done via direct ACH bank payments.
The problem with "We'll make our own payment processor for blackjack and hookers" is that banking and payment processing is highly regulated so there's a huge barrier to entry, plus most people don't want to have to create multiple accounts to buy things online.
I'm not a crypto guy or anything but this might be the only use case I can see for it since it's still unregulated and decentralized enough that campaigns like this wouldn't cripple entire industries.
This is so sad, it's always a group of irrelevancies ruins the fun for everyone. But anyway. I will still fully support NSFW games especially indie developer, nothing will change that.
Appreciate it. It may end up coming down to whether I can get enough new people on board the substar to stop the bleeding.
It's sad that 10 screeching harpies in australia are able to destroy industries in multiple countries like this. Payment processing needs to be regulated as utilities to prevent everything they are doing.
Not even that, they just need to be prevented from denying service unless something is genuinely illegal. My slim hope is that the internet loves a villian, and Collective Shout is certainly setting itself up to be one. But the line between no one cares and the whole net on fire is a thin one, and I fear most people just don't care about itch.
They do care about steam though. Americans also care about guns which is what payment processors have been trying to block sales of as well so they are systematically getting everyone slowly to hate them.
The frustrating thing is that this effects EVERYONE. That's why monopolies are bad. That's why censorship is bad. That's why allowing corporations to act as unelected pseudo governments is bad. If you're right wing, if you're left wing, or anything inbetween, this HAS or WILL effect you, because all your enemies have to do is shake a can of angry social media posts at visa and suddenly you're debanked, even though you did nothing illegal. If people could just realize this, and come together to regulate the shit out of the cc duopoly, this could be over for good. But that's extremely unlikely to happen. Bill in congress to do it, right now! But it's been re-introduced several years in a row and never goes anywhere.
Hate to say this, but this game is most certainly getting banned if itchio follows the Shoutstapo's demands. Hypnosis is very much ingrained in this game, so you should make plans for the worst case.
That's my thinking, yes. But who knows. Will have to see how things shake out.
Hate that this is happening to you, especially hearing about your health. It's bullshit that a safe-space for kink has essentially just been trashed overnight due to the pressure of some bad-actors.
Itch have published a post https://itch.io/updates/update-on-nsfw-contentBasically confirms that this shadow-ban and activity are due to Collective Shout using pressure from payment processors.
Yup, saw. They're going to do a "review". No word on how long that'll take, and probably 90% of stuff will end up nuked anyway. But we'll see.
And here we go again with all that bs... bet this is a payment processor thing again
100% harassment/pressure campaign by Collective Shout against payment processors. This needs to end.
it is
