Uh, why did the downloads for GT suddenly jump by 6x?
Cruel Serenade: GutterTrash » Devlog
Over time, as predicted, sales have steadily been going down here, while views and downloads, oddly, stayed mostly the same despite the ongoing shadowban. But today I've had 6 times the normal downloads on Gutter Trash, despite no increase in sales, and no update to the game. is there...something I'm unaware of?

I only have two theories...
Either a big surge of people can't wait for the next game and wanted a new go at GT (can happen near next release, but I'm not sure it's the case here?)
Or just one buyer got hacked or is a bot, and they put the download link on some shady sites? Idk how they could manage to give the data here, but heh..
Other questions, are the demo and full game data separated? Cos could also be bots downloading demo in mass for whatever reason
"Other questions, are the demo and full game data separated?"
This may be the best theory so far. I wouldn't attribute anything to "bots", we're still talking about a fairly small amount of downloads overall, and there's zero motivation to bot any of this. Just statistically odd. But there is indeed no differentiation in the analytics between the main game and the "demo" (ie the Japanese patch). So it certainly could have been that a bunch of Japanese people pirated the game and then decided to grab the translation, though again, odd that it would all happen on the same day.
to be real bitshiftgames with change NSFW rules on itch io or some other banned make hard find good game as befor also i think good some still dowload or give you money hell i earily player on you first game sure it way shorter then second one but still awsome game i think give you money is worh it good game art it self nice to + can't wait new upated cominjg out second game and i hope the change back old way some stop working on becouse of untill change or shadow banned becouse dum change make easyer find your game anyway keep up good work <3
Thanks? But also why are half the words in this paragraph missing? And why is there NO PUNCTUATION AT ALL? I try not to be a stickler for these things, but I'm fairly sure there should be at least ONE period in there somewhere. Late night with caffeine?
ye sorry was tried when i type + not best in english but in short i think good that many still dowload the game find it and worh to give money support the game is awsome hope make new game after this ;3
No worries. And glad you're enjoying it!
I love piracy. But I specifically paid for this game cause I think artists like you deserve the cash
Oh I don't judge. The scummy sites that pirate games and then sell ads on TOP of that can go to hell, but otherwise, my concern is just convincing enough people to pay for this stuff that I can keep making it. But again, this (probably) isn't piracy. It's people who already bought the game downloading it again, many of them all at the same time. Itch is full of mysteries.
I didn’t expect a response! Just wanted to say your games are amazing and I can’t wait for the next game. Take your time though, don’t want you getting burn out!
Oh I always respond, if there's substance to respond to. People are giving me there hard-earned money (or at least trying to), least I can do is be responsive. And thanks! Will continue on, slow and steady.
Do you have stats for which accounts are downloading, and which files?
The worst-case thought I have is someone purchased it once on a burner itch.io account, and is passing the account around itself for redistribution. There are other, less hijack-prone ways to pirate, so it seems pretty unlikely to me, but if you have access to the data you can probably test against some hypotheses like,
But if you don't have the data, the above is moot. Sorry if I'm leading you down an incorrect rabbit hole!
Unfortunately Itch doesn't share download info linked to specific accounts past a window of about a month. And no one in THAT window looks unusual. I agree, I don't think it's piracy, because if people really want to go that route, there are far easier ways than sharing an itch account. I'm not aware of third party itch clients period, apart from the one Itch makes. Could one of those malware assholes be downloading the game to inject shit into it and then spam it with those link comments? Sure, but again, no reason they need to download it so many times. Regardless, it seems like things have returned to normal for now.
Yeah, just checked on the itch client status and, while there are third-party clients mentioned in the readme of their source code, neither they nor the main client had updates that remotely coincided with the uptick in downloads. Even if they did, they're Android and iOS clients, so it'd still be baffling.
Given that things returned to normal, my own (weak / unverifiable) hypotheses are either "A person trying to download the updates had connection issues" or "Someone with a lot of reach reminded their friends, who had already bought CS:GT, about the updates a while back."
Thanks for bearing with me, I just like mysteries like this, hahah.
seguro muchos estaban buscando algo interesante que jugar y les llamo la atencion este juego, yo conoci el primero por navegar en la seccion +18 antes de la prohibicion y ahora espero con ansias la parte 3
Oh I'm glad if new people are finding the game. But remember, this game is purchase-only, which means NEW people would make SALES go up too, not just downloads. Only downloads went up, meaning a bunch of people that already owned the game decided to suddenly come back and download it again, on the same day, for reasons that are unclear.
I saw a similar rise on some of my books when the censorship/shadowban first happened. Far as I could tell, it was people who'd bought them as part of a bundle, not gotten around to downloading them, then going back and actually grabbing the files in case the censorship was about to escalate and they were gonna lose access to the files they'd paid for. Maybe some discord or other group only just now heard the news, somehow, and everyone there had the same reaction?
Oh same here, I got a small pop in both downloads and sales when all the craziness started, panic buying etc. But a. that was reflected across the stats and b. that was then. As far as I know (thus the question) nothing has happened to provoke another wave of this, and if it had, I'd expect all 3 (traffic, sales, downloads) to be up. ONLY downloads, again, implies people that bought some time ago, and thus likely were well aware of all the stuff that's been going on, as I made several posts about it.
hmm, i can only speculate like everyone else. i'm honestly hoping it went viral somewhere like in someone's Discord server cause you definitely deserve to have this kind of success <3
I do get bumps from fanart and other things, but that would show up in sales and traffic as well, which have both been flat. Next day was already normal again. Very strange.
Careful fren, my game have been constantly bombarded with bot phishing links so maybe could be that, plz be careful!
No, unrelated (also I think Itch finally cracked down on those, haven't seen them in a while). This is only happening on GT, which means you'd have to already own the game to download it. So a whole bunch of people are going back and re-downloading for some reason. Why I can't say.
Well lets hope they got a craving for yeens then~ hehehehehe
Hopefully it's a good thing, but I'd keep an eye out in case something malicious is going on. No clue what it might be, but hooray for the extra downloads nonetheless
As far as I'm aware the Shadowban has stopped. I've been able to search for NSFW games for about 2 months-ish now.
It has not. FREE NSFW games were re-listed some time ago. Paid ones have not been. Go search Cruel Serenade. You'll only get one listing (the first game).
maybe put the game In the collections to help people find it. and the game was noticed on media too? Those might explain why your game went up.
